Governor Inslee Signs Bill Banning Assault Weapons in Washington State | The Inquisitive Journal

Ban on the Sale of Assault Weapons in Washington State

Governor Jay Inslee of Washington state has just signed a new law that bans the sale, distribution, manufacture, or import of more than 50 models of firearms that classify as assault weapons. The law, which took effect today, is aimed at semiautomatic weapons that automatically reload the next round after firing one round per pull. While the law does not outlaw the possession of these weapons by individuals who already have them, it does prohibit them from selling them. The only exemptions to this law are law enforcement agencies and military within Washington.

Washington state already has some of the strictest gun laws in the country, including a voter-approved ban on the sale of assault rifles to people under the age of 21. This new law makes Washington the 10th state to put this type of legislation into place, joining states like California, Colorado, and Connecticut.

The bill was sponsored by Democratic Representative Strom Peterson and passed with a 56 to 42 vote. Supporters of the law argue that it is an important step in addressing gun violence, particularly mass shootings. However, detractors of the bill argue that it does not address the underlying causes of gun violence and infringes on the constitutional rights of law-abiding citizens.

One of the main concerns of those opposed to the ban is that it may only keep weapons out of the hands of law-abiding citizens, while criminals will still be able to obtain them through illegal means. They argue that the government should focus on addressing mental health issues and other factors that contribute to gun violence, rather than simply banning certain types of weapons.

Another argument against the ban is that it infringes on the Second Amendment rights of individuals to bear arms. However, supporters of the ban argue that the Second Amendment does not give individuals the right to own any and all types of weapons, particularly those that are designed for military use.

Washington’s Attorney General Bob Ferguson first proposed a similar ban in 2017 in the wake of the 2016 mass shooting in Mukilteo, Washington, where three people were killed and another one was injured at a house party. This law represents the second time that Governor Inslee has joined with Ferguson to call for a ban on the sale of what they classify as assault weapons.

While legal challenges are expected to come in response to this new law, the ban on assault weapons in Washington state is now in effect. Only time will tell whether this law will be effective in reducing gun violence in the state… or not.
