There’s been about 100 billion people who have ever lived. This statement may come as a shock to many, but it’s true. The population of the world has grown exponentially over the centuries, but still, the number of people who have lived is relatively small when compared to the number of possible human beings.
Have you ever wondered how many people can exist? Well, to find out, we can take a look at the genes. The human genome is made up of approximately 3 billion base pairs, and there are four possible nucleotides that can occupy each position. This means that there are 4^3 billion possible combinations of genes that can make up an authentic human being.

The number 4^3 billion is almost incomprehensible. To put it into perspective, there are estimated to be around 10^80 atoms in the observable universe. The number of possible human beings is so much larger than the number of atoms in the universe that it’s almost meaningless.
What this means is that you are alive against stupendous odds. The fact that you are breathing air, observing sunsets, and gazing into the night sky is a gift that most people who could exist will never experience. It’s easy to take our lives for granted, but when you consider the sheer number of possible human beings, it becomes clear that we are incredibly lucky to be alive.
Most people that could exist mathematically will never exist. This is a humbling thought, but it’s also a reminder to cherish the time we have. Life is precious and fleeting, and we should make the most of every moment.
So, the next time you’re feeling down or discouraged, remember that you are one of a kind. There has never been and will never be anyone quite like you. You are a living entity as there ever was, and that is something to be celebrated.
