Galaxy Crash or Not: The Amazing Hubble Telescope’s Observation and You! | The Inquisitive Journal

Have you ever seen a picture of two galaxies that look like they’re crashing into each other? Well, the NASA/ESA Hυbble Space Telescope took a picture of two galaxies named SDSS J115331 and LEDA 2073461 and they look like they’re colliding but they’re actually not! These galaxies are super far away from Earth, more than a billion light-years away, which is really really far!

The Hubble telescope takes lots of pictures of galaxies and stars, it’s like a super powerful camera in space. And there’s a really cool project called Galaxy Zoo where people like you and me can help classify these galaxies that the telescope takes pictures of. We can look at the pictures and tell the scientists what kind of galaxy it is, like a spiral galaxy or an elliptical galaxy. And sometimes, we might even be the first people to ever see that galaxy!

The scientists who run Galaxy Zoo project wanted to take a closer look at some of the most unusual and unique galaxies that people found, and they asked to use the Hubble telescope to take pictures of them. And not only that, they also asked the public to vote on which galaxies they want to see more of. So, not only do scientists get to decide but also regular people like you and me.

So, next time you see a picture of galaxies that look like they’re colliding, remember that they might just be lined up to look like that and they’re not actually crashing into each other. And also remember that you can be a part of space discovery by classifying galaxies in the Galaxy Zoo project!
